The Waters I Sail In
No ship is built without learning from other ships. The Arc(k) of Animal Alchemy grew in the soil of Richard Rudd's Gene Keys — one of the most remarkable bodies of contemplative work produced in my lifetime. Richard took the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching and spent years mapping a complete system of human shadow and potential through them. His work cracked something open in me.
The Dream Arc — the program Richard created with the artist Rosie Aronson — was the first time I saw what it might look like to bring that wisdom through painting and visual art. Rosie's work with animal imagery was a direct forerunner of my own. I honor her path deeply.
What I've built is different — not better, not a replacement, but a different ship sailing the same sea. Where the Gene Keys invites contemplation, the Arc(k) invites construction. Where the Dream Arc offers beautiful images to receive, the Arc(k) offers animals to crew your vessel with — each one a specific technology for a specific kind of weather.
The Ark metaphor, the three-tier system of Snare, Compass, and Lantern, the poems, the paintings — these are my own. The I Ching itself sits beneath all of it like bedrock. The 64 hexagrams have been humanity's map of change for over three thousand years. I didn't invent the territory. I drew my own map of it — and painted the animals that live there.
Other teachers whose waters flow through this work: the Hermetic tradition, the Kabbalah, the Celtic Wheel, Human Design, and the infinite ocean of Rumi, Alan Watts, and every mystic who ever pointed at the moon and said look.
I am a student. I am also the captain of my own ship. Both are true.
