Authority can slip away in two directions. Borrowed authority hands your judgment to a teacher, a tradition or a deck of cards, and that includes this teacher and this deck. Contrarian authority refuses every outside voice so you never have to be taught anything.
Sovereign counsel holds the middle. We listen widely, and the decision stays ours. We ask where a belief came from before we live by it. We change our minds when our own experience teaches us something new. And we own our results without blaming the teacher, the tradition or the stars.
