I was born into a family of watchers. My grandfather walked the woods of Michigan quietly and taught his daughter to do the same. My mother carried a field guide everywhere and never remembered a single name in it. She always stopped anyway. She taught me, without ever saying it directly, that stopping for something alive was never an interruption. It was the whole point.

I resisted that for a long time, the way you resist the things that are most true about you. I was the practical kid who made pros-and-cons lists for a dog he never got. But the instinct kept surfacing anyway. As a kid, I drew five, six, seven, eight, nine-pointed stars, unprompted, self-taught, trying to do it without ever lifting the pen. I didn't know why. I just wanted the line to hold.

For years I kept doing the thing I still do in every project I touch: I hold space for something to keep moving when it would otherwise stall. Not always the most skilled hands in the room. The one who sees the whole shape of a thing and won't let it die. I did it flipping a house with my dad, three years of two people slowly learning to trust each other as adults. I did it in a band with no single leader, where I became the peacemaker and the one who moved without waiting for permission. I did it building a business with my partner, and I learned the hard way what happens when I soften a hard truth instead of saying it straight, the softened version costs more than the honest one always does. I'm capable enough that it makes me judgmental sometimes, quick to read someone else's slower pace as a failure instead of just a different rhythm. That's a real, live tension in me, still unresolved. I'd rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.

Underneath all of it were two fears wearing different clothes: wasting whatever I actually came here to do by staying small, and getting trapped again inside someone else's structure, a job or a role that fit for a season and became a cage, after years of taking whatever was next available and calling it a path. What resolved that tension wasn't confidence. It was deciding to act like a steward, someone who takes care of what's in front of them from a position of strength, instead of an unseen servant hoping someone eventually notices the work.

Right before COVID, I got curious about archetypes before I even knew the word. I went looking and found Jung's work on the collective unconscious first, then Hermeticism, Western mystery schools, tarot studied properly inside one of them. A line credited to the 19th-century occultist Eliphas Levi stuck with me and never left: that a person stranded with nothing but one complete symbolic system could, given enough time, reconstruct the whole architecture of number, language, and growth from it alone. I wanted to build something that dense. Not for doomsday. For real use.

I spent years accumulating languages after that: Tarot, Kabbalah, the I Ching, Gene Keys, Human Design (I'm certified, Levels 1 and 2), a full year inside Gurdjieff-style Enneagram work with a teacher who ultimately wasn't the right fit for me personally, and I kept what was useful anyway. Each system felt like a different alphabet for the same underlying text. I could feel the connections between them the way you feel a word on the tip of your tongue, present, insistent, just out of reach. Nobody had drawn the actual bridges.

In March 2024, I took Richard Rudd and Rosie Aronson's Dream-Arc course, which maps animals onto the Gene Keys' Shadow, Gift, and Siddhi framework. I valued it, and I felt the gap it left: no visual architecture, no fully systematic structure tying every animal to every gate. That gap is part of what I set out to fill.

On October 29, 2024, I passed out during breathwork at a garden I'd been walking for six years, and hit the ground face first. Nineteen days later, sitting under the same tree with a fountain pen, a spider dropped out of the branches on a single thread. I didn't understand it. I innerstood it. Every language I'd been learning came together at once. Not as information. As knowing.

I went home and started drawing. Sixty-four patterns. A hundred and ninety-two animals. Three per pattern, Shadow to Glow-up to Lantern, a complete journey from darkness into light. I painted every one by hand.
